International Comparisons & Emerging Trends

Our third in our series of Masterclasses. This time we focused on how BIDs in South Africa and Wales have evolved.

We travelled to Cape Town and Cardiff where we were joined by Derek Bock,
COO of Voortrekker Road CID and Carolyn Brownell, Executive Director (Interim) of FOR Cardiff for a discussion around crime prevention, social development and trends that can be seen across the BID space worldwide.

During the second half of the Masterclass, we were delighted to be joined by Conrad Poulson, CEO of Huq industries an independent research company specialising in places and population mobility, or, location intelligence. Conrad shared his insights into how to maximise the use of data to improve places.

Previous MASTERCLASSES

What makes a great destination?

Our fourth Masterclass focused on the management and promotion of Britain’s great destinations.

The questions answered included: The Scottish government has now permitted ‘transient visitor levies’ – “are they a threat to BIDs or an added weapon in the armoury of cities like Edinburgh?” The UK’s new Chancellor of the Exchequer is reported to have once ruled out visitor taxes modelled on European models – “will the £20 billion black hole change her view?” The last government introduced Local Visitor Economy Partnerships (LVEPs) – “will the new government support these or cut them off at the knees?”

BIDs, National Trends & the Implications on Ballot

Workshop recording from Feb 2023

"A lot of the basic rules no longer apply” said Vaughan Allen, CEO of CityCo and the Heart of Manchester BID.

He’s right, something has fundamentally changed. For those with a ballot on the horizon , this workshop recording provide tips as to how the flexibility within the Regulations can be used to your advantage. With increased pressure on turnouts, the numbers of BIDs plateauing and yet different models evolving, this is a must-see workshop for all BID professionals and place practitioners.

Reviving Our Town & City Centres

Workshop recording from Apr 2021

Disappearing retail brands, trends towards more home-working and a tendency amongst the public to avoid congested areas might be enough to convince some place-shapers to ‘throw the towel in’.

But don’t do so just yet. Using practical examples, this webinar should convince you that the future might be different but, with careful planning and bold leadership, it can be bright. The workshop presented by Ipswich Central in conjunction with the Association of Town and City Centre Management (ATCM).

London & New York: Comparing Global BID Success Stories

So, how does New York now compare with London and what are the lessons that all of us can draw from evolving global city BID arrangements?

From New York we were joined by the President of the Bryant Park Corporation, Dan Biederman who has been involved with some of the city’s most high-profile BIDs including Grand Central which covers 70 Blocks in the heart of Midtown, close to the famous Central Park.

From London, the representative will be Ros Morgan, Chief Executive of Heart of London Business Alliance which operates six BIDs, each shaping the West-End including some of our most iconic destinations such as Piccadilly Circus and Leicester Square.
